AUTOGRAPH OF PAUL SPLINGAERD Everyone knows the leave-to pass of Paul Splingaerd, alias Lin Fuchen, which was published by Josef Spae (CICM) in his book on the biography of the Mandarin "Mandarijn Paul Splingaerd", 1986.

It acts of a copy used apparently at the time of the voyage in Europe of Paul Splingaerd, one does not know for which reason.

Let us add that the passport in question was taken again by Anne Splingaerd Megowan in her book "The Belgian Mandarin" published in the USA at the beginning of year 2008 (fig 64, pages 158-159). The author gives to it an integral translation (english) of the passport which dates from the campaignes which is followed the war of the boxers and where Lin Fuchen was described as ' Commissioner of the great kingdom of Belgium'. Here the very interesting document written in 1868 per Paul Splingard, also drawn from the same work of Josef Spae (page 29)

The letter, 10 pages, dated September 19, 1868 Marseille, chronicles the travel impressions of the young man he was at the time and it is not given here in its entirety. It is written in Flemish. The traveler signs 'Splingard Paul', and not vice versa. Anne Splingaerd, in his book cited on page 25 gives an English translation. Unfortunately, it is not an original letter written by Paul, but a copy of this letter. The signature is not authentic. The original copy is in the archives of Scheut (Kadoc - Leuven A.IV.a.1.8) the original is perhaps still in the family who was sent the letter, if they still exist (sent to the lady his sister - Dorothy Vanderlinden). The copy of this letter by Louis Devroey ("overgeschreven bijnaer naer dezelve sin") is due to its age. There was a time when the document were reproduced by hand and not photocopying or photography.
