LE BLASON PATERNOSTER

COAT OF ARMS PATERNOSTER FAMILY

from Remy Pio Paternoster Echeverria (Vénézuela)

This escutcheon, obviously drawn by a heraldic artist, presents both Chinese and Belgian characteristics. The Chinese is manifested in the Mandarin cap, the Belgian in the representation of a lion rampant, with claws and lampassé. It is not a traditional one as the head of the lion bears a human face. Above the figure is an untitled noble crown with five pearls. We do not know the significance of the mitre on this escutcheon. Is it there to symbolize the attachment of the Splingaerd-Paternoster families to the missionaries, their vicar general and their bishops? The shape of the escutcheon suggests Russian or British influence.

According to the late Remy Paternoster, Sr., it is the ‘coat of arms’ of the Paternoster family. The current owner of the document is Remy Pio Paternoster Echeverria. We thank him.
