This was taken when Paul Splingaerd was a trader in wool, fur and camel hair in Mongolia. He was wearing Chinese robes here, but not yet those of a mandarin. The young man standing is the 25-year-old Belgian traveler, Alfred Blondel. More about their travels together can be found in item 56 of 'Documents & Objets'.
La dernière nouvelle est qu'il est probable que le personnage debout n'est pas Blondel mais Obruchev qui a rencontré Splingaerd lorsqu'il était à Suzhou.
